2021-10-14, Thursday - bit of a lot of work - over my limits?

Triggers & resulting Symptoms

SLEEP: 7h18, up 7x (24'), creative break, plus 1h27 = 8h45 ➔ Feeling 90% well, Ache 1 of 7 ✅, the many short breaks are strange, but the night feels "sounder", "healthier" without melatonin. Allowing for a creative break is completely OK. But tomorrow I won't be able to sleep till 8:45 and 6:02 won't be enough. But the last stint was partly dozing anyway first. Maybe melatonin only if I don't feel drowsy enough?

Abbreviations & explanations

Entries start with night meds & sleep, before triggers/symptoms & treatments, because the “night before” is vital. So Fri-day starts with Thursday night, the night before Friday.

Pain "7" = crying (/out) point; my 1 is others 2-3, and due to pacing/treatments

My wife says my 7 is other people’s 12. 1 is probably 2-3. Due to pacing, keeping work down to 25% (12h/wk) and all my treatments (acupressure, GABA) and physio self-treatments I manage to keep getting my pains & Ache down quickly. 3 usually means the Ache, not pains; these I address individually, often automatically and on the fly now, e.g. twist-stretching everything or something specific after getting up.

TIME DATA, e.g. ' = mins, h = hours, 18:10:40', date YYYY-MM-DD

SELF-TREATMENTS (about everything else...)

The self-treatments listed are only things that I’m spotlighting & rewarding myself for at the mo by counting them; much of what I do at night is self-treatment to get back to sleep or alleviate (1-2h/d), certain regular movements at daytime, like twist-stretching (30’), writing this blog is self-treatment (30’-60’/d), and the further fibro-work is an indirect form.

2021-10-15, Friday - feverish feeling 15:00-11:00 probably from the ripening tooth inflammation (I doubt the NAC)…

No temperature: Only helpful thing I can find is Healthline’s: drink more.

2021-10-16, Saturday - night a bit short, but amazing how quickly my wake-up supps propped me up after a sluggish start; maybe a few minutes of gut-uneasiness after ribose… Testing NADH for PEM today. Ribose still under suspicion…

NADH is for PEM, post-exertional malaise, theoretically by improving the ATP in the mitochondria. So now I’ve got it, I deliberately just over-exerted myself at table tennis, 15’ longer than pretty full Ache. When I came home my wife said I have the sick yellow colour in my face, like before, plus a bit of orange from the exertion. 30’ later at 16:50 have now taken 5mg NADH, hoping for that bringing the PEM down quick and wary of it maybe causing “overstimulation & jitteriness”, some say start with 2.5mg, altho the “capsule” sizes (with filling) I’ve found go from 5 to 20mg. As they are not enteric coated, just normal HPMC I cd decrease the dose, by opening the capsule, but OTOH they may not be as effective as enteric coated ones anyway, so also less sfx.
At 17:05 I feel a lot better, much like the first times I tried serrapeptase, which didn’t keep on. Maybe placebo. As my psychiatrist said sign of placebo is that it continues working for months. My body is a bit warmly tingly. As I need to go to 2 shops now before closing time I can test whether I really (seemingly) have more energy or just feel like it… Unusual really warm feeling in my left calf for 5’. Bit of pins prick feeling in a right finger and left wrist is probably over-conscious.
18:15 no problem in the 3 shops, not quite sure if it feels natural or not. Going to do some yardwork before the light’s gone. Worked out fine, but unusually hot’n’sweaty, had to take my hoodie off. At least an hour. Then some music production. My wife says I still look tired, but that’ll be something different.

Development:

As the supp-treatment as well as their triggers/symptoms (= fx & sfx) are now my main focus, I’m trying out putting them first as treatments. Altho acupressure as been the fundament for single pains… But the supps are improving sleep, activities and Ache, after nothing else could/can (except last year a lot and now still sometimes cryotherapy/cold showering for Ache).

Lessons in self-care #94 Need to watch out if the energy NADH gives me is taken from something else I may need…
Reasons to be cheerful #96 First try with NADH really worked out well so far.

’ = mins = minutes, ‘’ = secs = seconds, h is hours as time length, 3h is 3 hours long, 3:00 is 3am, 15:00 is 3pm. 18:10:40’ means 40 minutes, starting at 18:10, = 10 minutes past 6pm up to 10 to 7pm. The date is the logical digital standard: YYYY-MM-DD.

SLEEP: slp, w, lbu/LBU, RLS, p, i

slp = sleep; reasons for getting up: w = (a)wake, lbu/LBU: lower back unrest (‘RLS’?), p: pee, p2: pain 2 of 7 before peeing, i: ideas.

ACTIVITIES: TT, e.g. "5:1"

TT = table tennis, 5:1 = score, usually showing how well I’m feeling: energy, relaxedness & alertness if the first number is much higher than the second.

SUPPS: supplements (as opposed to herbs & meds). Fx: Effects. Sfx: Side effects.

Self treatments are usually preventative or always have the same positive effect (e.g. cold showering improves Ache and sleep) - at least I do them for that - and I use “:arrow_forward:” to show what I’m doing to alleviate something and mark it off in the details “:white_check_mark:/:x:” whether it works well enough for a time or doesn’t’, e.g. Ache :arrow_forward: cold fast shower “:white_check_mark:

2021-10-18, Monday - again great sleep, only 17’, 4 breaks - but GABA overdose!

Just 400mg (I take 3x600mg without problems): focal seizures and incredible bladder pain and frequency, now I remember how it used to be!
The added GABA wasn’t necessary, I’d just seen a certain supp-combi and thought I’d try to repeat it one more time at night, reduced: but it doesn’t work like that, that’s comfirmed!

Supps TAKEN TODAY: sleep ✅, starting PF early, plus a 3rd GABA (instead of mumijo and rosewort) was also good. Treatments

Supps TAKEN TODAY: After yesterday's GABA overdose I've realized I've been feeling seizure-ish during table tennis for quite a few weeks, whether I'm focused or not. Need to reduce GABA, it's been 3x600mg lately, and I think 4x600 again last night, whilst it was only 400/600/400 in Sept. sleep? Also I seem to have taken Ribose? Meal ends?.. (mumijo & SRP),

REDUCE GABA to 400/600/600 & checking if sleep stays good/better, before trying some ribose again
/20:35 P5P. 1st PF, selene, 1x rosewort/Mg carbonate/B1 at meal. Not mumijo! (later…)

/23:20 2nd 600mg GABA, 1st !100mg theanine, 3rd passiflora, 1st serrapeptase = SRP
/01:40 3rd 400mg (I think 600) GABA, 2nd 100mg theanine, 4th passiflora, 2nd SRP,
/03:15 2 mumijo
/07:05 zinc, 3rd SRP, 3rd mumijo
/08:10 600 GABA !100mg theanine, 1 Mg glycinate. NAC.
/12:00 4th mumijo
/13:50 500 NAC, 1 malate, 1 SRP, 14:00 1st ALC to get a bit more alert.

?16:40 NAC, Mg glycinate, SRP.
?19:45 Mg malate, NAC, NADH, as well as SRP before eating and to help calm my muscles down.

Lessons in self-care #97 Got to watch out I don’t get some cold & keep spirits up, despite drizzy weather…
Reasons to be cheerful #100 Obviously been taking too much GABA anyway!

The date is the logical digital standard: YYYY-MM-DD.

slp = sleep; reasons for getting up: w = (a)wake, lbu/LBU: lower back unrest (‘RLS’?), p: pee, p2: pain 2 of 7 before peeing, i: ideas.

SELF-TREATMENTS (about everything else...)

Reasons to be cheerful #102 Good, hopeful start

Ache :arrow_forward: cold fast shower “:white_check_mark:
fw = fibro-work, meaning reading and writing this blog, the reference base, on 4 fibro-forums and researching fibro-stuff on the web.
AuTr = Autogenic Training (usually to actively get - back - to sleep, so counting it as sleep and AuTr…),
FAT Flash/fast autogenic training: immediate image of dreamy floating in space or liquid from jaw to legs.
cold/FCS = Flash Cold Shower (20’’-60’’) , I count it as 10’ tho. At night with ear plugs & all lights off.
breath-hold/WHM-B-H = Wim Hof Method Breath-Holding,
Neck 1 is stretching top right to bottom left, vice versa & sky/ground, neck “1+” is stretching far further diagonally downwards, neck 2 is pressing my head against my hand “without moving”, left right and front.
loins = loins/groin = stretching the ligaments there.

HWB = Hot water bottle,
RR = bp = blood pressure (Riva Rocci), plus pulse. Used to be normal, plus sometimes white coat syndrome, went up since fibro, seems to have gone down again enough so I’ve not only stopped lercanidipine, but also candesartan and am checking RR regularly.

↯ ↛ ↺ ↮ ⇝ ⇾ ⟹ ⭆ ⤮:

Hi Sharon, thx for asking! Yep, all under control, I’ve had them for about 20 years, they are focal, caused by cortex left over in my speech centre from birth my good neurologist found out. My right hand starts shaking, then my speech goes wonky (aphasia) for 1-2 minutes, sometimes my brain too, but I can still usually do things like cycle fast or win at table tennis (but I can’t always continue counting points). Sometimes I get them in one phase in every 1-3 months, worse from the prescription meds I got (amitriptyline, tilidine), actually better since using GABA, but if it’s imbalanced, e.g. too little GABA, or too much glutamin (= dopamine) or too much GABA so the “GABA shunt” reduces the amount of GABA/serotonin produced naturally, and this is something I hadn’t been paying attention to of late, having focused on the help GABA was giving me for sleep… (it’s helping me in 10 areas and that’s a lot to pay attention to at the same time). My docs (GP, neurologist, sleep lab psychiatrist/neurologist) can only rudimentarily help me here, but assist my thoughts and trials, interested in my successes, cheering me on.
The focal seizures are one of the reasons I don’t want to drive a car at all tho, altho my neurologist allows me to.

GABA is one of the “Devil Drugs” lol hang in there (also IMO a nuclear option which is not a bad thing just hard to control. So are you still using amitriptyline at all? Its actually one of my favorites. Didn’t think it did much for pain control until I stopped it. I learned it was very subtle at 25mg but did make a difference. (especially in sleep)

TJ

Hey TJ:
Devil - drug?! Whoah! :horse_racing: 8-). I as ever mean the supp, neurotransmitter & amino acid Gamma-Amino-Butyric Acid, not its drug derivatives e.g. gabapentin (Neurontin) or pregabalin (Lyrica), phenibut, baclofen or mirogabalin, as people often misunderstand…

Can’t imagine GABA being considered a devil drug by anyone, considering it’s long been considered by researchers not able to pass the blood-brain-barrier! Recent studies have revised that, but can’t explain it yet. It definitely does cross my BBB tho, and it has definitely placebo-status, as my sleep lab psychiatrist contends, as it has greatly improved my severe fibro in 10 areas continually for over 6 months now.
Also I’ve recommended it to 2 befriended fibromites, one of whom “thanks me daily” for the change it has made to her life for fibro fog, whilst the other realized she doesn’t need GABA, she needs tyrosine (using the amino acid questionnaire).
So GABA is so much of an Angel Supp for me, not at all a Devil Drug! Some people only need 125mg of it per day (or even just pixie dust amounts), I need about 1.5g, but sometimes I forget, and went up to 1.8 and then 2.2g, that was the problem the past days.

What I’d call Devil Drugs are actually almost all meds I’ve tried, cos of massive sfx, so I keep clear of them as of all devil stuff :japanese_goblin: :japanese_ogre: :smirk_cat: , incl. - never wanting to try them - gabapentin and pregabalin, as well as amitriptyline, which I took for 4 months last year, and did absolutely zero for my pain, zombified me at night and half the day, even at 10mg and under, but caused 8 sfx, the 8th being steadily increasing seizures. I weaned off of it in only 10 days and felt increasingly better every day. But not just meds: Similar zomfibying fx/sfx with only 2mg of CBD oil and only 1mcg!! of melatonin too (5% of the tablets I’d been prescribed)… And strong sfx with other fairly common supps & herbs like 5-HTP, L-tryptophan, ashwagandha, taurine…

So all the more “angelic” is the real GABA with glutamine, theanine, passiflora being uttermost game-changers for me, apparently :new: NADH for post exertional malaise, maybe :new: NAC & ribose for energy too, maybe support from magnesium malate, glycinate, mumijo, P5P (B6) & serrapeptase.

My mistake I was referng to Gabapentine. whic is hard to regulate lots of side effect as you noted but Miraculous when the right balance is achieved .

BUT as a supplement GABA, a non essential amino acid is one I would stay away from personally as it is dealing with the Devil. When naturally produced it ordinarily is found in the eyes and brain and is a inhibitory neurotransmitter. BUT outside of those two areas is GABA has long been viewed as a by-product of liver disease and contributes to hepatic encephalopathy.

Introducing it as a supplement CAN have the same effect of causing Nonconvulsive status epilepticus which is essentially is when you have siezures over and over in your brain, though they may not cause any physical symptoms beyond sleepiness. But may also, if amounts are too high, cause; trouble speaking, muscle weakness or twitches they can’t control, eye movements they can’t control, tremors, trouble swallowing, sleepiness and occasionally - seizures. You may not be crossing the BBB as you think but messing with your liver function having what appears to be a beneficial effect. Its sorta like alcohol. Social to buzz to alcholism, to fried liver. Good turns to bad to catastrophe that ther is no coming back from. Be careful my friend.

Phhhhoo - what a scary scenario you’re scetching, TJ!
:ghost:
Thanks for your warning :warning: tho… - I’m all for knowing the dark :black_flag: side of everything…
But let’s see… :eyes:

I’ve studied about 30-40h on GABA - so surprising that your information has eluded me up to now…

Your liver disease (mis)quote is from a study about the POSITIVE fx of GABA on the liver

I’ve found your above quote “GABA has long been viewed as a by-product of liver disease and contributes to hepatic encephalopathy” in this study
:one: which is about GABA protecting against severe liver injury.
:two: Your quote is also cut off. It goes on to say “in patients with cirrhosis” - I have no liver disease and no cirrhosis, so I don’t see the relevance. To the contrary: if I had liver disease I’d have too high levels of GABA and adding GABA would according to my logic cause serotonin syndrome, so immediately sfx.
What follows this is a list of neutral to positive influences, incl.
:three: reduces chromosomal abnormalities
:four: decreases malignancy potential
:five: stimulate DNA synthesis for regenerating livers
:six: protective role of GABA signaling against acute liver injury
:seven: advantageous effect of GABA in … hepatectomy and a … partial liver transplantation
:eight: enhances antioxidative countermeasures and improves mitochondrial function.

The alcohol-alcoholism comparison is only a warning against ALCOHOL...

I’d see as a slippery slope argument which clearly more than anything else admonishes yourself to keep those Scotch bottles carefully locked away as you are already almost an alcoholic :champagne: :wine_glass: :sunglasses: (your own implication… )

GABA does NOT buzz me, it alone IMPROVES 10 symptoms, with no alternative!

As opposed to alcohol creating a social help & buzz out of the ordinary, what GABA is doing to me is only returning my life in part to the health I used to have, nothing buzzy, nothing different, nothing extra, no artificial, unnatural feelings. That is also my criterion for other things I’m trying, like ribose (similarly taurine before): In a higher dose it makes me feel artificially feverishly slightly over the top (taurine very much so), which is something I want to avoid in all cases, because it doesn’t feel right, natural and might make me overdo things and crash, like alcohol does - but GABA does not.
Also: Someone who feels the need to drink alcohol to take part in normal life has alternatives in therapy. I don’t. If I stop GABA, I will have to reduce my activities again, go back on sick leave and retire. Remember I have been to 46 docs, 15 physios and tried >100 treatments in the last 2 years and GABA is the only thing that has helped, even if it’s not a cure. Are you really warning me to stop it? And what then?

I don't have NCSE/those sfx, my seizures are REDUCED by GABA

Similarly your quote about “nonconvulsive status epilepticus”, which I can only find anecdotal evidence for in studies like this one about tiagabine in a 27yo. Here they are saying that this, which increases GABA, might occasionally be a problem for people without epilepsy, whilst people with partial seizures are given it. But I do have these, and they got less - due to taking GABA. Also I have never had any of the fx you have mentioned, nor any of the symptoms of NCSE. When I overdose, which as I said creates a GABA shunt and “serotonin syndrome”, which are a different set of symptoms, and sets 3-5 of my symptoms back to the way they were when not taking GABA, but not all 10. That only goes to show I need to keep the dose moderate, not to show that I should stop taking it - doesn’t it?

My doc says to do all this it MUST BE crossing my BBB. And docs rule, you say...

I had the same thinking that it might not be crossing the BBB. More importantly than your liver example it seems to be produced in the gut biome. But looking at research and asking my sleep lab psychiatrist, these explained otherwise - that my successes with it show it MUST be crossing the BBB and has nothing to do with my biome or liver. And according to moderator wisdom :smile_cat: I should listen more to docs who know me than to things I read on the forums :smirk_cat:.
My doc says it helping more than a few months proves it also can’t be placebo any more, and to definitely continue with it.

The leaky brain hypothesis caveat against taking GABA is not convincing.

Have you read any of the studies or many (long-term) experiences about the positive effects of GABA?
The only - fairly - real caveat I’ve found up to now is the “leaky brain theory hypothesis”. I’ve spent hours reading and pondering on this, but find it even less convincing (and applicable to my body) than the “leaky gut theory hypothesis”, and it has also recently been very much revoked by the originator of the so-called “theory”. Again according to research and my doc, this hypothesis is rubbish.

So, if I’ve still missed something:
Could you cite your sources? Or explain further?
Of course I’m now worrying :worried:, but at the same time I can’t at all see why I should be! :smile_cat:

I think you should go back and reread what I said and review some basic physiology. I’m not sure what article you are referring to. GABA is naturally produced when it is, it is found in the Brain and the eyes. Liver disease is the among the few known “things” that causes it to occur outside of those two areas.

When it is found, outside of the normal production it CAN cause the effects I mentioned.

As far as my sources, I’m afraid it’s memory, which can fail me occasionally and the materials in addition to the lectures labs etc. in the 12 years of preparation for my career are not found on the internet. (and considering the cost of texts and credit hours even in the dark ages of my training it hadn’t better be… I’m not sure what Google has - usually not much.

But honestly I don’t much care. If alternative treatment gives you relief, that certainly is your right.

I’d say the comparison to alcohol is pretty right on. It a poison. Harmless in low amounts. Has effects in higher amounts that some people enjoy on occasion And used regularly/too much can have very serious effects.

The same can be said for most medications and supplements. The amount, how much, how often varies by the individual.

My granddaughter is a good example. She recently had a cooking accident in her apartment the resulted in some pretty severe burns. (second degree) through a parade of increasing treatments she ultimately ended up with c.Diff.

Tough luck for sure. Better than losing her foot from infection. Except she is an autoimmune patient with gut involvement.

Most c. Diff patients recover with rest, good food etc and a different antibiotic. Not her. For her two and half weeks in the hospital including 3 days in ICU where it was touch and go. All from routine ABX to prevent infection.

Of course you should worry. People who prescribe for a living do. I can assure you the Doc who prescribed my Granddaughter was worried.

Self prescribing based on self research should be worrying. We have folks taking horse dewormer from the feed store to cure a disease they may or not have and may have been able to avoid by a few simple actions and chose not to based on doing their research.

Thinking out loud:
Has this blog now rightly been re-categorized under “Complementary therapies”?
After thinking about it and also analyzing and re-categorizing many other posts,
I’d argue what I’m doing here is demonstrating trigger hunting, symptom tracking and using a lot of general, common sense strategies. Supps are just a part which that has lead me to, because it was last on my list and nothing else helped.
So I’m thinking the general “Symptoms & Treatments” is more suitable (but better than the “What’s Up With You?” category in any case).

Maybe you - and others - don’t realize?: The regular triangle ► in front of a line always means that’s a subtitle in which I’ve hidden details, which you click on to read it completely.

If you reread the 6 clickable subtitles of my post, a relevant study on liver disease is hyperlinked in the 1st, plus: Recent research shows GABA is present in the pancreas and a lot of torso tissue and is (like probably all neurotransmitters) created by gut microbes: That’s the newest “basic physiology” for you. The sentence you used is a word for word quote from the first, however taken out of context and thus inverting what it was saying.
In the clickable (2nd ) subtitle on alcohol you’ll see my arguments on that. Plus: Alcohol like meds cannot have a too low dose: but supps can; my body proves that my GABA-levels are too low, despite it being a non essential AA.
In the 4th there is a relevant study on GABA & NCSE confirming that what you said is not relevant to me, as I do normally have seizures.

You are again confusing me: OTOH first “dealing with the devil”, “devil’s drug”, “catastrophe” and “alcoholism” sounded as if you were worried and wanted to worry me specifically about GABA, as if I weren’t reading up enough research. OTO in contrast you are now saying you “don’t care”, it’s my “right”, but I should “worry” like people should worry even about antiobiotics, cos the dose makes the poison - which sounds as if everything means dealing with the devil…
To put it into my perspective: I need to “worry” less about the amino acids than I actually do have to about the antiobiotics like you’re mentioning, plus most types of physio and even food. So the devil may be in the details and lurking everywhere?
Instead, I’d water it down: Not anxious worry, but careful self-caring, lots of research & informing my docs is necessary, like you know I do.
This blog shows that I know what happened with the dose & why: Anyone else mightve just thought it’s just my regular seizures and bladder problems coming back. But I know I’ve taken slightly too much GABA, all on the blog to read up.

My sfx from GABA are a joke compared to my sfx from amitriptyline and the way out is much quicker… :upside_down_face:
What has now been cropping up is just 3 of 10 symptoms returning back to how they were before GABA!!!

Neck 1 is stretching top right to bottom left, vice versa & sky/ground, neck “1+” is stretching far further diagonally downwards, neck 2 is pressing my head against my hand “without moving”, left right and front.
loins = loins/groin = stretching the ligaments there.
ex = exercises
HWB = Hot water bottle,
RR = bp = blood pressure (Riva Rocci), plus pulse. Used to be normal, plus sometimes white coat syndrome, went up since fibro, seems to have gone down again enough so I’ve not only stopped lercanidipine, but also candesartan and am checking RR regularly.

Development:

The reason for probably overdosing GABA Oct 18th-20th seemed to be seeing a sleep formula which I wanted to repeat. Looking at SAM-e again I saw that most of its seeming sfx Oct 3rd-10th were actually serotonin overdose symptoms (bladder, seizures) and I still have the very dry mouth after 5:00 (still doubt it’s zinc or SRP or any supp). However on a hunch I’ve checked that I changed my theanine product from what I thought was net 100mg capsules, self-encapsulated (gross 300-400), to really 100mg capsules on the 17th. Theanine is aside from glutamine an antagonist I’ve been needing to balance out the GABA (serotonin vs. dopamine, since many of my symptoms are apparently related to this). What follows from that is that I could try taking GABA up to 1.5g but also increasing theanine a bit, e.g. doubling it. As I’d been a bit seizurish in every table tennis game in the last weeks, I’m thinking that I shdnt go back up to 1.8g.
But SAM-e now seems to deserve a revisit, as I’m assuming it wasn’t actually anything new (melatonin or SAM-e) I was taking at the time, but praps the increased GABA-dose.

Research-search today: Cotton? clothing / weighted blankets (tactile & mechanical allodynia)
and yesterday: amitriptyline etc. for IBS,
this week: Boswellia / Frankincense, Weather, CholestOff for blood fats
Additions: Rhodiola, Mg-types, GABA, P5P-B6, interim additions & TOC for reference lists, Dosing/Overdosing/Microdosing, SAM-e/SAMe,
this month: NAC, last month: Enzymes serrapeptase & NADH/+

Lessons in self-care #101 I watched out for myself on the walk, always on the lookout for the next trees (difficult on dykes)
Reasons to be cheerful #105 I managed the whole walk at quite a speed without getting the others bored.

Ache :arrow_forward: cold fast shower “:white_check_mark:
fw = fibro-work, meaning reading and writing this blog, the reference base, on 4 fibro-forums and researching fibro-stuff on the web.
At night with ear plugs & all lights off.
breath-hold/WHM-B-H = Wim Hof Method Breath-Holding,
Neck 1 is stretching top right to bottom left, vice versa & sky/ground, neck “1+” is stretching far further diagonally downwards, neck 2 is pressing my head against my hand “without moving”, left right and front.
loins = loins/groin = stretching the ligaments there.
ex = exercises
HWB = Hot water bottle,
RR = bp = blood pressure (Riva Rocci), plus pulse. Used to be normal, plus sometimes white coat syndrome, went up since fibro, seems to have gone down again enough so I’ve not only stopped lercanidipine, but also candesartan and am checking RR regularly.
:new: “V” for loins = lie on back, legs up and let legs fall to sides;
:new: twist-stretching more for the loins
