Bruxism/teeth grinding

Bruxism is a condition in which you grind, gnash or clench your teeth. If you have bruxism, you may unconsciously clench your teeth together during the day or grind them at night, which is called sleep bruxism.
Bruxism may be mild and may not even require treatment. However, it can be frequent and severe enough to lead to jaw disorders, headaches, damaged teeth and other problems. Because you may have sleep bruxism and be unaware of it until complications develop, it's important to know the signs and symptoms of bruxism and to seek regular dental care.

Hi all,My name is Gabby. I have sleep bruxism. I just had a lot of dental work done, and most of it was a waste because of this. I only have dental coverage from my insurance until I turn 21, then…Continue

So yesterday I bought a $20 mouth guard from the drug store. I woke up in the morning and the part where the two plastic parts were glued together - had been split apart. Granted, I got home late and didn't do the whole "fitting" process first - so maybe that's why.

However, if after the fitting process this happens again, I have a question for you guys. Is there a way that insurance would pay for a custom-made mouth guard for TMJ/bruxism? I have straight Medicaid, if that helps..

I didn't know that clenching my teeth was a fibro thing. I take adderall and I thought that was what was causing me to clench. I don't think I grind my teeth and luckily they are not worn down. I just clinch them very hard. I don't even notice I do it until it starts to hurt. WEIRD.

I have this too. I am awaiting my denist appt tomorrow to get fitted for a jaw splint. I have the guard like in the pic but she said it's not sufficient anymore. One interesting thing she said I can actually wear it during the day (I can get away with it--I work at home) when I am really stressed, which of course causes clenching. Wish me luck. I am also going to ask my neuromuscular therapist what I can do to help RELAX my jaw. Even right now while working it's wound up tighter than a top. I can feel it. I am really looking forward to some relief. I just suffered a severely cracked impacted tooth which they said was from grinding (I think it happened during accident that caused fibro but no provider will go on the record). Bottom line is I want to do all I can to preserve my teeth. Good luck to all. I am glad there is this discussion.

Gosh Tab, I get those dreams too! LOL and those teeth look like mine without the lipstick too. LOL I could not find a better pic, LOL That's about what my mouth piece cost, its a lot for a bit of plastic. I don't know how but if I can't find mine, I know to look where my dog keeps he treasures, LOL

Hi, all ... seems like I'm in the same boat. Been grinding my entire life .. also have TMJ .. I think someone hacked my pc to get this default pic cuz it looks EXACTLY like my teeth, with the exception of the lipstick stain (ya think they woulda noticed that, huh?). My dentist has told me I will literally have no teeth left in time. I'm supposed to get some kind of jaw splint -- not a dental guard..this is different..something for TMJ that actually sets the jaw--but insurance doesn't cover it & I don't have the $900. I've tried the OTC guards & chewed right through them. One I even went to bed with at night & never saw again! I have nightmares of my teeth falling out. Freud says that's a sign of insecurity over your appearance. No...I'm really just afraid of grinding my teeth out!!

I think we may cause our TMG by doing this. I just use the mouth piece when I am out of control (when I'm awake) I use it when I sleep too. I have been given muscle relaxers for it. Sometimes in the day and I notice I am doing that I try to leave my mouth open, like if I have a stuffy nose, or I suck on hard candy. When I can't get to the oral surgeon or get muscle relaxers I get the over the counter stuff for backache. (I am not a Dr. I am just telling you what I use for it) but only when it is really bad.

I clench my teeth all the time also. My doctor I have now doesn't seem to care. I'm ready to run screaming into her office and tell her off. I have in the past went to wal-mart and to the sports section and got a mouth piece and wear at different times and it helps some. But right now I just can't afford to go to a dentist. any suggesstion?

My hubby kids me that I got to grind my teeth at night to rev myself up for being a miserable cow the next day, lol

I clench my teeth All the time but did not realize it may have anything to do with my Fibro as I also have TMJ and figured that was the reason, oh my checks getting so sore!
